Tag Clouds to Visualize Text Data

(*Some pictures and Figures are omitted due to the copyrights)

*Abstract

For this week's assignment, I did research on the analysis of the methods of using word-cloud data for the academic theses. In addition, I looked into “corpus” briefly. As for the word-cloud research, I read through the articles you sent me the other day. Those are “Using Tag Clouds in Academic Writing” by Writing Studio and “Using Tag Clouds to Visualize Text Data Patterns” by SURS. There are many useful tips for treating word-cloud information to help write my long essay. I would like to introduce some of them in this report.
In addition, I found the info site “corpus” truly convenient for collecting media trend indicators. The data, which the “corpus” gives me, would make my thesis more persuasive.

In this article, a lot of Tag cloud sites and applications are introduced. Moreover, they show how to use them as a mean to summarize contents. Among them, I was interested in Figure.8, which is very close to what I want to do in my paper. Among them, I was interested in Figure.8, which is very close to what I want to do in my paper.  According to the text, the cloud-picture was generated by article titles from the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society’s (HFES) journal over the past 50 years. This would be applicable for my news headline analysis.

This method that the site shows is quite interesting because it is a suitable way for my thesis theme. For example, the researcher conducted an evaluation of "President Bush's State of the Union addresses". Those results are so convincing and it can be applied to the media trend study which is one of my research objects. In particular, when it comes to scouring someone's opinion or statements, those techniques would be quite useful. Previously I created some tag-cloud pictures made of David Cameron’s speeches in reference to this report.

*Review for “Corpus”

One of the astonishing features, which “Corpus” have, is the variety of the evaluation styles. For instance, the site enable us not only to search certain words among vast news articles but also to generate a lot of handy charts or figures from various keywords that helps illustrate the report outcomes. I searched some phrase and collected those data.

The figure.1 above shows how often the word “refugee” is used in news articles from 2010 to 2016. As you can see, the word “refugee” suddenly began to appear since 2015-B period. This seems to relate to the Syrian refugee crisis, especially the incident of the drown boy in Turkey definitely affect the media trend. The figure.2 illustrates the frequency of the word “migrant” usage. We can find an interesting similar transition between the word of “refugee” and “migrant”. On the contrary, the figure.3, which is the indicator of the word “immigrant”, depicts that the phrase have not been used comparatively in the media after the terrible tragedy started to be paid attention to.

Conclusion

Thanks to this experiment, I could find many new ways to enrich my research paper. So far, I get three main topics to pursue. One is “Headline evaluation” using Net-tone and second one is “Tag-cloud” and third one would be “Corpus analysis”. I am sure that those methods helps improve the credibility of my report.
